What is Safe Haven?
In Maine, a person may relinquish a child, age 31 days or younger, directly to a safe haven provider without penalties. That person can (but is not required to) provide any details regarding the infant to the provider.
Safe Haven Providers:
- All law enforcement officers
- Firefighters
- People staffing safe haven baby boxes
- Staff at emergency rooms
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Dentists
- Therapists
In June 2021, Maine passed a law allowing the use of Baby Boxes in the state. We are currently waiting for Department of Health and Humas Services to write the required rules and regulations regarding their use before they can be implemented.
